Chronological Part 2

I started this 3 years ago and while I uploaded the photos to my profile page, I never posted them on the blog with their blurbs attached. No promises I'll finish it this time, but I'll at least make an attempted. I haven't been here in so long that my domain was expired for 2 months without me realizing it, and I really want to get back into taking photos again, but we'll see. Photoshop is caput for me once more unfortunately.

Anyway, I'll do at least one more lol.

Halloween

Halloween fun with Nimbus. Didn't turn out how I wanted but I was playing around with some new things.

Background Information

I decided that if I'm going to post photos of my dolls in chronological order I should probably write a little blurb to go with it since currently the photos are more or less the same. I was going to do this on Instagram but after fighting with it several times I've decided to keep it short on Instagram and leave the rambling for here.

Name: Clay
Arrival: March 2006

Clay was my first doll that I purchased. I had planned to buy a Dream of Doll U and last minute made the decision to also purchase a Mir after staring at the thumbnail for several days. Back in 2006 it was common for Dream of Doll to list items as "out of stock" while they were fulfilling orders and I had several days of waiting since all of the "guardian boys" were out of stock both in basic and full-set versions and U was one of those 4.

When U was finally restocked, only the basic version was available and not the full-set that was my initial plan since it was my first doll and I didn't like the idea of not having any clothing for them. (Si, Hoo and Wu were unavailable basic after the restock and only available as full-set, go figure.) I decided that since I wasn't able to get what I'd originally planned, I would spend a little more and get the girl I'd been casually looking at while I waited (since my plan was to get more from Dream of Doll in the future since I liked their sculpts so much at the time).

After about 2 months of waiting and an initial struggle to pay through PayPal (the early days when you needed certain things to be able to pay over $500 and had to send an e-cheque instead of a transfer, yikes), they both finally arrived. I'd had plans for the U and for another boy doll after that but I had no plans for Clay. Thankfully she at least hair hair and eyes when she arrived (since Dream of Doll gave hair and eyes for every doll at the time as well as a carrying case).

She arrived with no magnets in her head and instead her S-hook was attached to the head cap and her pupils were dead centre in her eyes. Since this was 2006, she was also assembled from the head down which meant you had to disassemble from the feet upwards to fix the problem of her eyes since the tension kept the head cap in place and you could only slide it a few centimetres in any direction--barely enough to squeeze a finger into the gap that was left.

During my first attempt to pose my two brand new dolls together for some photos, while I was still working out their names and who their characters were, Clay's arm snapped from one position to another, striking the back of the U's head and knocking him face down, causing a dent in his nose (not to worry, I later discovered it was only the MSC that was dented). Being a troublemaker has been part of her character ever since.

She went through 3 different names and different characters before I decided to scrap what I had initially planned and go with something else that I had written before I got into dolls. The character I had written was very different from how Clay turned out but some aspects were the same and as a result a new version of the character came to be.

I've had her for 15 years now and she's one of the only dolls I own that I've never considered selling.

Valentine

So far I have taken profile photos for 3 dolls on my list. At this rate I might be done in two months lmao.

For the first time in a long time I decided to take photos of one of my SD couples. I've had issues posing them together in the past (and as I discovered last night, in the present as well) because their bodies are older style that can barely even sit never mind anything else. But I had pulled them out to take photos for their profiles so I figured I might as well give it a shot and maybe get some cute Valentine's Day photos. No props or anything because it was spur of the moment (and getting them just to sit next to each other was already a challenge...).

Both of these guys were recently repainted by my friend CallMeGorgeous BJD Aesthetics. πŸ’–

Chronological Order

A friend of mine suggested photographing my dolls in chronological order from when I received them as a way of deciding which dolls to take photos of when the answer is inevitably both "all of them" and "none of them" as the sheer number owned between my wife and I is often overwhelming (and surprising).

So I sat down the other day and wrote out a list, using Instagram posts and email receipts to piece together a timeline of when my dolls arrived. I only know specific days for a handful of them (my very first and 2 that coincidentally arrived on the same day as two different family members), so I limited my list to "month" and "year".  I'll be keeping a record here so that I can check off ones I've completed.

Aside from the recent photoshoot with Clay, my initial plan is going to be to take new profile headshots for each doll so I can properly update the "doll profile" page on this site. It's woefully out of date and while some photos were taken in the same setting, many were not and I'm the kind of person who likes stuff like that to match. πŸ˜…

So for now, until I take more photos (hopefully that will be soon, I'm rather in the mood lately), a list:

Trying New Things

I'm not dead, lmao.

I moved! And because of that, all of my stuff was in different boxes and motivation to find it all was pretty much zero with work going on at the same time. Now that I have some downtime (thank you, lockdown) I've decided to try photographing each of my dolls in chronological order from when I received them.

I plan on doing new headshots for everyone, but I waited too late in the day for the natural light and I haven't been able to find my ring light for my camera yet to use my photo tent for them so for now I'm just doing some photos using new string lights I got since I've been enjoying coloured lights for myself.

I got frustrated arranging these earlier so while I can do two colours I couldn't get the energy to do more than the one. I'm still figuring out how I want to use these.

Moving on

Tragically my laptop fell on the floor last week and dented the corner of the display causing terrible black outs, horizontal line textures and colour variations throughout the screen. I've since acquired a replacement but I am faced once again with the dilemma of needing Photoshop but not feeling that Adobe prices their applications appropriately--their Creative Cloud system looks like a nightmare.

So I have been looking for a replacement for Photoshop and research has led me to trials for Affinity Photo and Pixelmator Pro. Despite article claims that they are very similar/intuitive/better than Photoshop, the learning curve on these programs begs to differ. Thus far I am not satisfied with either program but I reckon that is more likely due to the 20 years I spent using Photoshop and not because these new applications are all that bad.

I decided to do a comparison and edit an older photo in each program to see what it was like. I'm probably going to continue my research by watching video tutorials since neither program is particularly transparent about how to do things I want and what exactly is happening.

Early Mornings

Any time I want to do something cute/romantic/sappy the first couple I always think of is Rose and Ruby. <3

Ruby is a plumber and works long hours, which often means he's up early and home late. Meanwhile, Rose is a blogger and works from home, so he spends a lot of time missing Ruby.

Reunited

Just over a week ago my wife and I were reunited with our very dear friends who live a province over. Our time was too short so the photos from that time are few and I have some regrets about that but I'm happy we spent the time doing other things instead. <3

Here are some photos of our DDs together.

Ruby & Rose Quartz

Ruby got a new faceup a long time ago but it was around when I stopped taking photos, haha. He still needs a new wig because as much as I like the colour, it's a little too intense for him and it is not friendly with the editing process. One day hopefully.

Anyway, this is one of the actual canon OC couples my wife and I have, Rose and Ruby (Rose is hers, Ruby is mine).

To the Moon

A lot has been happening at home and as a result, there is no space really for me to take photos for the last year. Among other things, I got the bright idea of changing the doll room to the master bedroom and sleeping in the former doll room (the smaller of two bedrooms). Unfortunately this came with a lot of challenges and is still not completely finished, however there was enough progress for me to sneak in a couple photos today. :)

This doll is a Ringdoll Amethyst and he belongs to my wife. His face is so adorable I just want to squish it. ;3; His name is Telesto, and he is the Moon to Vega's Sun. :)

I should also probably mention that I forgot everything I used to do to edit photos so...this was interesting. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Together At Last

So back in June my Bimong Narin finally arrived! His name is Ruby and...he's amazing, truly. Bimong did an amazing job with his body I can't believe how different it feels from the one I used to own.

Anyway, Ruby is Rose's boyfriend. His faceup is temporary (as in my excitement I forgot to remind my fiancee that he's ginger) and he definitely needs new eyes but so far he's amazing.

Chalcedony and Citrine

Yesterday was a disaster with dolls and my cat, so I had a major meltdown. Thankfully everything is okay, and I had the energy to try again today. This...didn't go the way I planned.

I took some inappropriate images of Chalcedony and Citrine. It...just kinda happened.

Post Convention

Hey all!

I didn't really take any photos at Doll North other than the ones for Project Runway (since we don't have a photographer on staff at the moment). Most of my photos were on my phone and there aren't even that many of them, whoops. πŸ˜…

This year more than previous years I feel like I was working more than I was enjoying the convention. I feel like I missed out on a lot of things so it had me kind of down for the last week or so. As much as I like working on Doll North I wish there would be a year where Sabrina and I don't have to work the whole time. I saw so many posts during and after where I realized I was only able to talk to a couple people and not for as much time as I would have liked. Add to me being awkward and well.... πŸ˜…

So unfortunately, not con photos in this post. I took a few photos with my camera after the convention instead.

Timeline

I spent way too long compiling a timeline of my photography over the last 12 years. Trying to pick only 4 for each year was difficult. For a few of the years I tried to get some from the beginning and some from the end, but some years had more photos than others. πŸ˜‚

It's quite large, so I'm going to post it under a cut.

Tests and Inappropriateness

It was pretty sunny today which made it difficult to work with the lighting in my apartment where I normally take photos. Normally with overcast lighting I bounce it to the unlit side with my reflector but today the sun was shining and it was like having an additional light source when I tried to reflect the sun onto the darker side. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚I didn't end up taking as many photos as I planned. I need to charge my camera again.

I'm so enamoured with Rose Quartz and he's not even my doll. I can't help but pose him with Chalcedony. I tell myself it's practice for when I find a doll to be Ruby. They're both on the motion line body which makes posing much easier.

Also, Chalcedony is a really inappropriate character.... It makes sharing his true self difficult. As a result I made myself a NSFW image to use on my Instagram for the couple of photos I took that I will post there...and also here. Pls don't kill me lol.

In this case, it's more like "behind 'Read More'" haha

New Arrivals

This is a late post but some things needed to be completed first! So back in mid-March the order I placed with my good friends and my fiancΓ©e made a surprise arrival from Fairyland! I placed the order on my birthday (Jan 29) and the order contained all of the event pieces and 5 minifees so I was really shocked that we received it before April! I completely expected to wait until at least May. Even more surprising was that I was blessed with 0 custom fees. πŸ™

Anyway! Only 2 of those minifees were ours and they were Minifee Niella and Minifee Ria, both boys on the new motion-line body. Now our core gem group is finally complete! (We were only missing Rose Quartz.)

So on top of waiting for them to arrive, my fiancΓ©e had to paint them and then with the help of our dear friend Chibi we washed, dried and dyed some alpaca fibre so Ainsley could make my boy a wig! Next will be Rose but for now he has 10 billion options for his hair. πŸ˜‚

To continue my long tale, my Ria also didn't have a name or a character at all. I literally bought him on impulse because that's apparently how I make all my doll purchases. I eventually decided to name him Chalcedony (kal-se-dony) and give him the nickname Cal. For those who don't know, Chalcedony comes in beautiful pastel colours (blues, pinks, purples) and it's also the stone on my engagement ring. 😊

And yes, I ship all of the AU pairings with these characters apparently. I can't help myself. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Heart Eyes

I got heart hands thanks to a friend who was selling some so now I get to play around with them! My incoming minifee also got these hands and I'm excited to have them capable of two-person hand-hearting. XD

I don't know what this is. Monkey ears? πŸ˜‚

Alternate Coupling

So for some reason my actual doll couples don't like to photograph together, specifically Emmy and his boyfriend Zircon. However, Emmy and Diamond looked great together and didn't cause me any fuss. Go figure! I decided to take some AU photos of them, haha.

Minifeels

With the new posts going up about Niella arriving and the new motion line body I've been really hyped about my incoming order from Fairyland. I probably have at least 1 month left on it, but I'm excited to see how the new body moves. I've been eager to photograph my moe-line boys as a result, plus I got some new things in for them to wear. Emmy in particular got some cute pieces. <3

Emmy got a new shirt from GelatoBabyHandmade. It's so soft and wonderful. <3
